Mali – Introduction

Mali is the birthplace of Mande culture. This culture has imprinted a great number of West African peoples. It was transmitted then, as now, by the griots. At the same time historians, singers and musicians, griots are also the commentators of social events. It is in Mande that were located the successive capitals of the Malian Empire, founded by Sundiata Keita, in the XIIIth century.”Mande” means the languages used by a great many West African peoples, as well as designating the cultural heart from which all those peoples have spread.Today an epic culture, exalting the exploits and feats of the brave warrior survives the historical conditions which gave birth to it.
